What is a Surety Bond and How it Differs from Insurance?

Image
Small business owners have several ways to protect their financial position from loss, some of which are better understood than others. Insurance coverage, often in the form of liability insurance, and surety bonds are two of the most common types of protection small businesses may implement. While these terms are often used interchangeably, there are distinct differences that make them stand apart from one another. This brief guide provides insight into how surety bonds work, how that differs from insurance coverage, and when either is needed to safeguard a business and its customers. The Ins and Outs of Surety Bonds Being bonded and insured is not the same thing. Surety bonds – the first part of that phrase – provide protection to the customers and clients of businesses owners, licensed contractors, and other professionals. Bonds are provided by surety agencies as a way to reduce financial losses or damages incurred by the bondholder's customer should the contract agreed upon n...

#IGCommodityChat: the murky future of oil

IG presents the next instalment of 'IG Commodity Chat' – a series of live discussions focused on commodity markets Our second chat will look at  possible trends in the oil market Presenter Sara Walker will be joined by industry advisor Malcolm Graham-Wood and IHS Markit's director of oil, Spencer Welch Watch live on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube at 1pm (UK time) on Thursday 29 November Viewers can submit questions for the Q&A using #IGCommodityChat on social media The future of the oil market has increasingly been called into question as a variety of factors continue to impact global supply and demand, including US sanctions against Iran and the negotiations between OPEC and non-OPEC nations. The Cash Flow Analysis for Our Rental Property (at Year End 2018)

Image
It's time once again to do our annual rental property cash flow analysis. To see previous years, visit the link at the bottom of the post. T wenty-eighteen was another challenging year for our rental property: 100% occupied (thankfully), new contract negotiations, and major water damage that ruined the wood floors! If you're new to my recaps, this is property is our old personal residence – a Frisco, TX townhome we purchased in 2007 and converted to a rental property in 2012. We bought it for $205,000 and put 20% down. We now owe $137,000 on it and the value is listed as $324,000. We manage this property ourselves: listing it , vetting tenants , managing repairs , rent collection , and raising rent . You can now add 'dealing with a major insurance claim' to that list.. It's been a very positive experience overall, especially if you consider we're somewhat accidental landlords. In summary, this year was our second best yet! Thankfully we kept our tenant through ...

How to Get Sideline Passes for NFL Games (Our Exclusive Team Experience with Barclaycard)

Image
This experience was sponsored by Barclaycard. However, all content and opinions expressed here are my own. W ouldn't it be cool to be on the sidelines at an NFL game? This could be a dream-come-true experience, especially for long-time or young fans. Who doesn't want to get close to their heroes down on the field? I'd love to one day bring my kid(s) down on the field. Not many people get to experience being that close to the action of arguably the greatest sports spectacle in the world: an NFL game. The intensity, athleticism, and excitement are unmatched. Outside of suiting up and getting in the actual game, being on the sidelines at an NFL game is as close as you're going to get to the action. But how do you get down there? Unless you're a player, coach, a former player, member of the media, or some other type of employee/contractor of the team or stadium, you're not going to easily get down there. I certainly don't recommend trying it without permission. ...
